There was a year here in the good ole’ US of A where the LX platform Dodge Charger was the most stolen vehicle in certain areas.

It’s only funny because it’s one of the top police fleet vehicle choices.

I wish these numbers would be corrected for the proportion of the total fleet which said vehicle represents. If a car is the most common in the nationwide fleet (I’m looking at you, Ford pickups), then it’s not all that surprising that it’s the most stolen, if thieves steal vehicles in a relatively indiscriminate fashion.

Edit: In other words, I’d be interested in whether these thefts over- or under-represent the number of F350s in the entire Canadian fleet. I’d suspect it does, to some extent, but probably not as much as other vehicles.

The F series has been the best selling vehicle in Canada for the last 12 years or so and in the top 2 for about 25 years. Mind you mostly it’s F150’s. But I live in the north end of southern canada and everyone has a Ford truck.

Well, what else *is* there to steal in Alberta other than a bunch of pickups?

...

...

...

A win from the Oilers.

Wait...that’s not theft when they are giving those away...Even the Maple Leafs beat them. With Sparkles!

thieves steal cars that have parts that will sell.

guessing the list in the usa is similar, except the Camry is somewhere in there.

The thieves are obviously using the stolen pick ups to smuggle those diabeetus filled Timbits past the FDA embargo and into the US.

60% of thefts are from running unattended vehicles. I betya that’s a uniquely arctic statistic.

Parts, yes. FTA:

Dubin said there has been an increase this year in shipping containers at the Montreal and Halifax ports filled with car and truck parts.

DrJohannVegas has hit on point #1: Many of these vehicles are simply very common. The Civic has been our best-selling car for 18 years straight.

Point #2: In addition to being very common in the west, the Super Duty F250/F350 is (was?) apparently very easy to steal. And since most car thefts are done in order to commit other crimes, it’s a no-brainer that car thefts done in order to commit additional thefts would be pickups. It’s a bonus to the thief if the truck already has valuable goods in the bed and/or attached to a trailer, which many Super Dutys do. You know when truck ads always picture a truck at a jobsite, farm, or recreational spot, pulling some huge trailer or bed full of stuff? That’s what many of them look like here. Without exaggeration, an F350 with a sled deck or construction trailer is as common in B.C. and Alberta as a Camry.

The F series is definitely a top seller here but it’s largely the F150 so the F350 is over represented.

I Live about 7 hours away from Mtl, and here everyone knows someone who has had their truck stolen when in Montreal. I live in the regions, so many HD trucks here. HD trucks almost have a Steal Me signs on them in Port cities.

Read the top list and thought most of those F350s were probably in Alberta. Scrolled down a bit and lo and behold, ‘yup'.

In Alberta, people love their F-350’s in premium or Lariat trims.
That makes them prime targets to be stolen and re-sold.

Also, people who steal them are generally just trying to earn money for fuel to run their own giant King Ranch Edition F-350s

Yea, before I stepped out for a coffee and a smoke, I considered looking up sales figures, but my suspicion was that the 150 was the big seller (as it is in the US).

Still, I’d like to see figures on how over represented it is. The one snag is that for relatively rare stuff, one or two thefts will inflate that number.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ZDX in real life - I'm surprised the thieves can even find these in the first place.

I got bored (again) and decided to look up the per-model sales data. Some sites (goodcarbadcar) have it for the past few years, but any more in-depth data is usually behind a paywall. While I love Oppo and also love testing hypotheses, I can’t afford to splash out on a subscription to an industry site just to move an Oppo discussion forward.
